Testicular biopsy
Assisted Reproduction:
Description and indications
Testicular biopsy is a surgical procedure in which, through an incision in one or both testicles, a portion of testicular tissue is removed in an attempt to obtain spermatozoa.
This intervention is indicated in the absence of spermatozoa in the ejaculate, or when the quantity and quality of sperm is insufficient to be able to attempt an assisted reproduction technique; in cases of obstruction of the seminal tract of infectious, traumatic or surgical origin (such as after the practice of a vasectomy).
The aim is to obtain spermatozoa in order to inject them into the couple's eggs obtained by ovarian puncture.
This surgery is performed under anaesthesia and on an outpatient basis.
It begins with a small incision in the scrotum, through which a small amount of testicular pulp is extracted and immediately processed in the laboratory to determine the possible presence of spermatozoa suitable for reproductive use.
