4D scans (three-dimensional ultrasound) are the latest ultrasound techniques. They show pictures of your baby in three dimensions. 4D scans show moving 3D images of your baby, with time being the fourth dimension.
This technique allows us, if the conditions are favourable, to watch the fetus and take pictures of it.
What is a 3D ultrasound for?
The 2D ultrasound with a high definition is able to detect a fetus’ malformation without the need of a 4D scan.
4D scans may nonetheless provide more information about a known abnormality because they can show more details from different angles and can help to analyze the results from a 2D scan. It’s the parent’s choice to decide whether they want to see their baby ahead of the birth or not. However, it’s recommendable to consult a doctor.
When is the best moment to make this kind of ultrasound?
If you decide to have one, the best time to have a 4D scan is when you’re pregnant between week 29 and week 32. But sometimes it’s not possible to see the face, depending on how the baby’s lying (position, amount of liquid etc).
It’s advisable not to use moisturizing creams or anti- stretch mark creams ahead of the ultrasound, as they could make the pictures’ quality worse.
We will hand you after each ultrasound a CD with all the pictures and the medical information. Furthermore, we will give you a DVD with a video and the results of the 4D ultrasound, if you ask for it.
