What is multidimensional ultrasound?
Multidimensional ultrasound, also known as 3D, 4D or 5D ultrasound, is an ultrasound technique that goes beyond conventional two-dimensional (2D) ultrasound. Unlike 2D ultrasound which provides flat, static images, multidimensional ultrasound allows the foetus to be visualised in three dimensions (3D), providing depth and volume to the images. In addition, some more advanced technologies such as 4D and 5D ultrasound incorporate the temporal dimension, allowing the foetus to be observed in real motion, providing even more complete information about its development.
How does multidimensional ultrasound work?
Multidimensional ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves that are emitted from a transducer and bounce off the structures of the mother's body. The reflected waves are processed by a computer, which reconstructs three-dimensional images of the foetus. 4D technology allows these images to be captured in motion, while 5D technology adds more realistic lighting effects and textures for an even more striking visual experience.
