Implementation failure

What is implantation failure?

Implantation failure is considered when, after several transfers of good quality embryos into the woman's uterus, pregnancy does not occur. This scenario can occur after several attempts at in vitro fertilisation, generating uncertainty and discouragement in couples faced with this situation.

What is implantation?

This is the process in which a blastocyst stage embryo comes into contact with the uterine wall and becomes attached to it to continue its development. The lining of the uterus (endometrium) is prepared for the developing blastocyst to attach to it through many internal changes.

What are the causes of implantation failure?

The causes of implantation failure are diverse and complex, and in many cases, no single precise cause can be determined. Factors that may play a role include:

  • Embryonic problems: Chromosomal or genetic abnormalities in the embryo can prevent its correct development or hinder its implantation in the uterus.
  • Uterine abnormalities: Abnormalities in the shape or lining of the uterus, such as fibroids, polyps or adhesions, can affect endometrial receptivity and hinder embryo implantation.
  • Immunological factors: Immunological incompatibilities between the mother and the embryo can generate an inflammatory response that prevents implantation.
  • Endometriosis: This pelvic inflammatory disease can affect the quality of the egg and the endometrium, making embryo implantation difficult.
  • Hormonal factors: Hormonal imbalances, such as insufficient progesterone levels, can affect endometrial receptivity and implantation.
  • Lifestyle factors: Habits such as smoking, excessive alcohol or caffeine consumption, stress and an unhealthy diet can also influence the chances of implantation.

How is implantation failure diagnosed?

What treatments are available for implantation failure?

Treatment of implantation failure will depend on the specific cause. Some of the treatment options available include:

What can be done to prevent implantation failure?

  • Manage stress: Chronic stress can negatively affect fertility, so it is important to implement stress management techniques such as yoga, meditation or therapy.
  • Go for consultations prior to conception: It is advisable to consult an assisted reproduction specialist before starting the search for pregnancy, especially if there is a history of previous infertility or implantation failure.

A message of hope

Implantation failure, although challenging, should not be a cause for discouragement. With an accurate diagnosis, proper treatment and the necessary emotional support, many couples manage to overcome this obstacle and achieve their dream of becoming parents. Science and medicine are constantly advancing, offering new options and hope for those facing such challenges.
